Youth Volunteering Activities

Youth Volunteering with RAICES

There are a number of youth volunteer activities available with RAICES. They are listed below. To learn more, visit our primary volunteering page.

San Antonio Bus Station Program Data Entry

The San Antonio Bus Station Project provides aid, resources, and information to asylum-seeking families and individuals who arrive at the downtown San Antonio Greyhound station. As part of this project, we complete intake forms and input them into a digital database to track information about these families and individuals that is useful to understand the current state of immigrant detention and the asylum process; this includes information regarding where they’re coming from, where they may have been detained, if they’ve been separated from family members, and more. Youth volunteers can assist this program by completing inputting the intakes into our digital database. This is a biweekly activity.

Requirements:

  • Be a high school or college student
  • Complete a background check
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation
  • Bring a laptop (preferred, but optional)

San Antonio Refugee Resettlement Donation Room Organizing

Our Refugee Resettlement collects important donations to be distributed to the refugee families that we serve in San Antonio. It is vital that we keep this donation room organized, orderly, and that we inventory the items that are in the room. Youth volunteers can assist with organizing the donations and inventorying items. This is a biweekly activity.

Requirements:

  • Be a middle school, high school, or college student
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation.

San Antonio Refugee Family Donation Pack Preparation

Our Refugee Resettlement Program welcomes refugee families arriving in San Antonio from various parts of the world. These families often arrive in San Antonio will little to nothing, so it is important for RAICES to prepare packs of donations to give the refugee families when they arrive. Youth volunteers can assist with preparing donation packs for the families we will be serving. This activity takes place the last Saturday of each month.

Requirements:

  • Be a middle school, high school, or college student
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation.

San Antonio Refugee Family Airport Reception

When the RAICES Refugee Resettlement Program welcomes refugee families coming to San Antonio from all over the world, it’s important that these families feel empowered and supported when they arrive in San Antonio. Youth volunteers can assist by being present at the San Antonio International Airport when families arrive to greet them and give them donations. This activity is scheduled based on the families’ arrival dates and times.

Requirements:

  • Be a middle school, high school, or college student
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation.

San Antonio Refugee Family Apartment Preparation

As a gesture of support and a guarantee for these families’ comfort and ease of acclimating to a new place, RAICES steps up to prepare the refugee families’ apartments for when they arrive. Youth volunteers can assist by helping to build simple furniture and prepare the apartment for the incoming family. This activity is scheduled based on the families’ arrival dates and times.

Requirements:

  • Be a middle school, high school, or college student
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation.

On-campus Discussions

Here at RAICES, we believe that knowledge is power. The more our communities become familiar with what is happening and what has happened in immigration, the more capable we are of changing current policies and practices to become more compassionate and just. If you or your group is interested in coordinating an on-campus discussion for your school or class, RAICES staff can collaborate with you to provide your peers and campus with an informative, interactive, and meaningful discussion. We are able to customize our discussions to your needs; we’ve completed discussions for a variety of topics including seeking asylum, immigrant detention, family detention, RAICES programming, and more.

Requirements:

  • Complete initial meeting with RAICES Youth Volunteer Coordinator
  • Provide a space for the discussion.
