Social Media Toolkit: Family Separation 2.0

Background

On June 26th U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee ruled that all migrant children detained for more than 20 days at ICE’s Family Detention Centers be released no later than July 17, 2020 due to COVID-19 and the violations of public health practices in detention centers. However, ICE was recently granted an extension to push the release date to July 27th. Because this order only applies to children, it could be disastrous for families in detention if ICE releases the children but keeps parents locked away. ICE can choose to release these families TOGETHER at any time.

Families cannot wait any longer. The full order states what we already know: ICE CAN release parents with their children immediately. We need to make noise about this or families risk being separated in the same way we saw under the Zero Tolerance Policy of 2018.

Tweet 1 ICE has now updated Judge Gee on their progress in creating a formal – soon to be legal – policy to separate parents & children.

What does this mean?
ICE can finalize & implement this separation protocol before July 17th & it’ll be PERMANENT.

Tweet 2 Once a family separation policy is finalized, ICE can use it to either:

1) take kids away from their parents
OR
2) keep kids in detention indefinitely

ICE has gone 5 years without formalizing a separation policy, no need to do it NOW during a pandemic.
