Ser todo Es ser parte/To Be Whole Is To Be Part

This exhibition unites a group artists who work in historical and contemporary traditions of drawing, illustration, graphic arts (including printmaking), street art, and muralism. All four of them have a visual vocabulary in common—remixing hybrid figures that are part human, part zoomorphic (Pre-columbian deities)—as a way to juxtapose the past with the present. Demián Flores, a Mexican artist based in Oaxaca, MX, designed this mural titled Amerikkka Tropical, after famous Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros' América Tropical mural on Olvera Street. Flores incorporates present-day issues such as immigration and deportation into mural's imagery as a way to update Siqueros mural. The other artists in the exhibition—J. Chavez, Rurru Mipanochia and Celia Herrera Rodriguez—also dive into present day issues relating to gender, race, sexuality and class in their work, with recognizable Chicano/Latinx iconography.
