Six Years Ago Today, The Trump Administration Proposed Separating Migrant Kids from Their Parents
Six years ago today, federal government officials proposed systematically separating parents and children to deter asylum seekers and refugees from coming to the U.S.1
From mid-2017 to January 2021, at least 5,636 children were separated from their families.2 Five years later, 998 children are still waiting to reunite with their parents.3
Those who were reunited suffer irreparable harm from the trauma of being separated for months on end — not knowing where to find each other, when they’d see each other again, or if they’d ever reunite.
The criminalization of asylum increases the likelihood of bad outcomes for families in dire need of safety and security. That is why RAICES has been speaking out and fighting back against the continued systematic degradation of the U.S.’s asylum laws.
If you believe families belong together and free like we do, take a moment to reclaim Valentine’s Day with a tribute in honor of families who have been impacted by family separation, or someone you love who believes families belong together and free.
