“The only clear and conscionable decision is for Biden to create a safe and just asylum process immediately.”

TEXAS – In response to the news that the Department of Homeland Security is planning to end the use of the Trump-era Remain in Mexico policy, RAICES issued the following statement:

“Today marks a moment of optimism and hope that relief is near for migrants impacted by the Remain in Mexico policy still seeking safety at our southern border.

RAICES has seen first-hand the cycles of violence that the Remain in Mexico policy inflicts on migrants seeking security at our southern border, including our clients.

The Biden Administration announcing its commitment to end the Remain in Mexico policy is a victory that belongs to our community. Whether in the courts, on the streets, or in the halls of Congress, we fought to end Remain in Mexico, and we are now one important step closer to winning.

The Biden Administration must move expeditiously to make sure everyone impacted by Remain in Mexico is immediately disenrolled from the program and ensure that EOIR stops holding all hearings that could result in deportations now.

We will continue to advocate for the administration to follow through and swiftly end Remain in Mexico in its entirety. We also demand that the administration create a safe and just asylum process that will allow all those seeking protection at our borders to pursue their asylum claims safely in the U.S.”
