“[Biden] can either put an end to the cruel and immoral Remain in Mexico policy immediately, or claim the toxic, white supremacist legacy of the Trump era as his own.”
TEXAS – Today, the Supreme Court issued its certified judgment in Biden v. Texas, granting President Biden the full authority to end Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy. In response to this news, Tami Goodlette, Director of Litigation at RAICES issued the following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s decision in Biden v. Texas made abundantly clear that President Biden properly and legally ended the racist, Trump-era Remain in Mexico policy in his October 25, 2021 memo. Yet, a month has passed and not only has the Biden administration done nothing to put an end to this cruel and immoral policy, the administration is shamefully still enrolling people in the program.
“President Biden ran on a platform to reclaim the soul of America by taking urgent action to undo Trump’s damage and reclaim our values as a nation of immigrants. But unfortunately, this administration has not only failed to keep its promises to immigrant communities, but is also refusing to do even the bare minimum of ending the inhumane immigration policies of the Trump era.
“With the Supreme Court’s certified judgment, President Biden has no more excuses. He can either put an end to the cruel and immoral Remain in Mexico policy immediately, or claim the toxic, white supremacist legacy of the Trump era as his own.
“The Trump regime designed the Remain in Mexico policy to inflict the highest level of suffering on families and children for choosing to seek safety in the U.S., especially Black migrants. Under the policy, tens of thousands of children and families have been unlawfully turned away at our doorstep and sent to dangerous makeshift camps with no proper shelter, water, food, or medical care. By allowing Remain in Mexico to continue, the Biden administration is actively choosing to create an environment of rampant danger and abuse where vulnerable people are at an increased risk of violence and exploitation.
“Seeking safety is a human right and RAICES and communities across the border are ready to welcome people seeking asylum to our communities once Remain in Mexico and Title 42 come to an end. People seek asylum because their lives, and the lives of their children depend on it. Restoring a fair asylum process will help keep people safe and families together. It’s time for President Biden to deliver.”
