Celebrating Immigrant Mothers: Ms. N’s Story

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the immigrant mothers and parents who will do whatever it takes to give their children a safer and brighter life.

Today, we honor Ms. N, pictured above with her children. We concealed their faces with flowers grown in Afghanistan for anonymity. Ms. N is one of our clients in the Refugee Resettlement Program. She recently arrived with her family from Afghanistan and is living in Texas.

In her own words, here’s what Mother’s Day means to her as a refugee mother raising seven children:

“I just learned about Mother’s Day, and I think it is very good for all mothers in the world. Hearing the word “mom” brings me the kindness to my heart, it reminds me of my children, hearing them saying Mommy. Mothers always take care of their children, raising them, feeding them, getting them education and training, supporting them in every single moment of their lives.

All the mothers who recently came into this country or become refugees and have to move here, they need to work harder than in their home country because children need more support. So this is my most important message: mothers need to be with their children.”

Happy Mother’s Day to Ms. N and all mothers on a migration journey. We celebrate and honor you today.
