Dear Congressional Democrats,
Organizations and community advocates across the nation demand that Democrats keep their promise on immigration and use every tool at their disposal to give our undocumented community in the United States the freedom to work with dignity and respect, freedom from detention and freedom from deportation. Communities in Texas suffer from harmful anti-immigrant narratives reinforced by Texas Governor Abbott’s white supremacist agenda. This fight has continued for decades, and the immigrant community across Texas suffers the consequences of this hate and xenophobia. We will not and cannot rely on the Republican Party, which has now become the party of Donald Trump and Greg Abbott, to create the change that we need this year. We are following the lead and resistance coming from our Texan sisters and brothers battling these attacks every single day.
Undocumented people have been facing injustice for far too long, and have lived through many broken promises on immigration. Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) and the Dream Act have failed in congress time and time again, even when Democrats had the majority. Although the Dream and Promise Act has passed the House, it is unlikely to pass the Senate unless the Democrats change their strategy. The Trump wing of the Republicans has taken over the party, using immigrants as scapegoats for their failures and expanding their xenophobic and racist agenda. Instead of fighting against these attacks and doing what is right, moderate Democrats have decided to try to appeal to the Republican base.
It is time for President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress to keep their decades-long promise and provide relief and protection to the millions of people who are still in the shadows, especially during the worst pandemic of our lifetime. We can’t accept any more excuses. There must be a winning strategy from the party and a pledge that Democrats will use every tool at their disposal to protect immigrants.
Democrats can pass legalization through a budget reconciliation process, without compromising on further enforcement, and can abolish the filibuster, so we don’t have to rely on Republicans to get this done.
CORE DEMANDS: We demand that President Biden and Democrats in Congress keep your promise and provide the immigrant community with:
- Freedom to work with dignity and respect;
- Freedom from detention; and
- Freedom from deportation.
- Supporting legalization through the reconciliation process;
- Abolishing the filibuster, and publicly supporting the Senate’s efforts to do so;
- Supporting the use of executive action to end the detention and deportation machine; and
- Supporting the use of executive power to give administrative relief to as many people as possible.
