“Now is the time for Democrats to use every tool at their disposal to provide protection for the immigrant community without relying on the party of Trump.”
San Antonio, Texas — In response to the anticipated introduction of the Senate and House versions of the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, RAICES released the following statement:
“The introduction of this bill is a good symbolic gesture, but it’s not enough to protect people like me, my family and my community. What we still need is leadership that will ensure there is a path to victory before the end of this year. Now is the time for Democrats to use every tool at their disposal to provide protection to the immigrant community without relying on the party of Trump and without compromising on further inhumane enforcement,” said Erika Andiola, Chief Advocacy Officer at RAICES.
“The path to victory on legalization is clear. Ending the filibuster, legalizing as many people as possible through the next reconciliation package and using executive action are all tools that can be used to protect the immigrant community without compromising anyone’s humanity. It can be done, and it must be done,” she continued.
“We have lived through many broken promises on immigration. Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) and the Dream Act have failed in congress time and time again, even when Democrats had the majority. Passing legislation this year will be no easy task given the extreme wing of the Republican Party and moderate Democrats who want to appeal to Republican supporters. Regardless of the challenges, President Biden and the Democratic leaders in Congress must keep their promise.”
