ICE is using a global pandemic to separate children from their parents once again. Hundreds of families in immigrant detention were approached by ICE officers with a difficult choice: to remain detained indefinitely during a pandemic or to allow family separation.
Officers presented parents with English forms, not provided in their native languages, asking to release their children but parents would have to remain detained, facing possible deportation. According to several accounts, these meetings were often limited to five minutes. So far, families have managed to keep their children.
ICE can choose a different path for these families. It can choose to free them all instead of separating them.
