Like you, we read Trump’s comments this morning about his plan to deny citizenship to people born here via an executive order. This act would violate the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
Many of our staff became citizens as a result of the 14th Amendment. As a nation largely comprised of immigrants this is a sacrosanct cornerstone to the idea of our nation, and it is one we won’t let go of without fighting like we at RAICES know how to fight, with legal strategy and our humanity.
These past two weeks have seen an escalation in both rhetoric and action from the Trump administration as the midterms near. We know from the acts like the ban on Muslims that this administration is happy to push forward with illegal actions to further cement the base. We won’t be taking this threat lightly. Our lawyers and top lawyers from around the country will fight this.
In these times, it’s important we hold steadfast to the lineage of civil and human rights movements that span generations. While U.S. history demonstrates the lengths powerful people will go to repress people unlike them, we must not forget the millions who have risen together to drown out hate with compassion. It’s also important we be there for each other, for our families and our communities.
Let’s never forget this, and let’s stick together (and of course, don’t forget to vote).
