RAICES Observes One Year Since 53 Died in Texas Trailer Tragedy

LARGEST IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES PROVIDER IN TEXAS CALLS FOR URGENT FEDERAL ACTION TO FIX THE NATION’S CRUEL IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

TEXAS – Dolores K. Schroeder, CEO of RAICES — among the first legal services agencies on the scene of the San Antonio trailer tragedy in 2022 — released the following statement:

Fifty-three lives were needlessly lost one year ago in a horrific, preventable tragedy resulting from a cruel immigration system that has wholly dehumanized and criminalized those who seek safety and freedom within our borders. Tragedy follows cruelty — the cruelty of a system designed to keep people out. We grieve this loss of life with their families, loved ones, and our San Antonio Community.

This horrific incident continues to serve as a reminder of the need for urgent federal legislation that protects the lives of individuals seeking a better future.

Let’s remember the 53 lives lost on June 27, 2022, and honor their memory by calling on our communities and elected officials to take urgent action to guarantee a compassionate, fair, and just immigration system.

RAICES will continue to provide holistic legal and social services to asylum-seeking, refugee, and immigrant families and individuals, modeling how a humane country must protect and welcome those seeking safety and dignity.
